An Accessible Day Out Visiting Raby Castle & Gardens

Here at Mellwaters Barn, we love discovering local attractions that are welcoming and inclusive for all. Recently, Andrew, our owner,  along with his carer, Michael and Michael’s wife, enjoyed a day trip to Raby Castle and Gardens, one of County Durham’s most beautiful and historic estates. Their visit offered a brilliant chance to see how accessibility is being thoughtfully integrated into one of the North East’s most iconic landmarks.

Easy Arrival & Accessible Parking

On arrival, Andrew and the team were pleased to find that Raby Castle’s car park is spacious and easily accessed, with plenty of designated disabled bays close to the entrance. A simple, stress-free start — exactly what you want at the beginning of a day out.

Beautiful Gardens & Smooth Pathways

The grounds and gardens have recently undergone significant investment and it shows. The gardens were immaculate, with wide, well-maintained paths that made it easy for Andrew to explore in his wheelchair.

“We enjoyed a lovely walk around the old buildings and gardens, which were all easily accessible in the wheelchair, before heading over to the castle itself,  again, very easy going.”

Whether you’re strolling past historic outbuildings or admiring the formal borders, accessibility shouldn’t detract from the experience it should enhance it.

Exploring Raby Castle

Raby Castle, one of the best-preserved examples of a 14th-century fortress, blends history with hospitality. On arrival, the staff were warm, welcoming  and knowledgeable, immediately directing Aandrew and his friends to the accessible entrance.

Inside, visitors can enjoy a 10–15 minute introductory video about the castle’s history, the Neville family, and the current custodians’ vision for the future. While the upstairs isn’t wheelchair accessible, there’s a clever interactive screen that allows guests to virtually explore the upper floors, complete with detailed information and images.

“Although we couldn’t access the upper level, we were really impressed by the effort made to ensure we could still experience the full story of the castle.”

It’s a thoughtful touch that ensures everyone can enjoy the history, even if not every part of the building is physically reachable.

Family Fun For All

Raby Estates have also invested in a fantastic outdoor adventure play area, making it a great destination for families and multi-generational groups. Whether you’re travelling with kids, parents, or friends, it’s easy to spend a full day here exploring the grounds and soaking in the atmosphere.

Andrew & Michael’s Verdict

“It’s definitely a must-visit when in the area. We’d give it a solid 7.5 out of 10 and  only losing a couple of points because the upstairs isn’t accessible. We’ll absolutely be back next year to see how things have developed.”

Why We Love Sharing Accessible Adventures

At Mellwaters Barn, accessibility isn’t just something we talk about. It’s the foundation of what we do. Andrew designed our cottages with lived experience in mind, creating step-free, wheelchair-friendly accommodation where comfort, independence  and countryside charm meet.
