Welcome to Mellwaters Barn Cottages

A very warm welcome awaits you at Mellwaters Barn Cottages which are centrally placed in the North Pennine Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty within easy reach of the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and York, making it an ideal holiday destination whether you are looking for a relaxing holiday , action packed holiday or just enjoy walking in beautiful countryside.  As owners we believe in making you holiday as relaxed and pleasurable as possible and to this end there is mostly someone on site to help you with any queries you may have.

The approach to Mellwaters Barn from the A66 is down a farm lane and across a Grade II listed Packhorse Bridge. The Barn dates back over 100 years and is situated in the centre of the farm with magnificent views down the valley to Bowes or up towards the moor. At the far western edge of the farm is God’s Bridge the best example of a natural bridge in the UK and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Whatever the time of year we are happy to welcome you any day of the week, for 3 to 7 days or longer. We are a family business and see many of our visitors on return visits to enjoy the facilities at Mellwaters Barn.

  • Visiting Beamish, Bowes Museum, Durham cathedral, York Minster and the Lake District are some of the destinations within easy reach.
  • Local activities include bird watching, cycling, fishing and walking.
  • Beautiful quiet country roads in some of England’s wildest countryside with magnificent scenery where wildlife is plentiful.
  • East Mellwaters Farm in the northern Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has built a number of purpose made footpaths for ease of walking.
  • Beautiful clean air and crystal clear water these award winning cottages are designed for a perfect relaxing holiday.
  • Mellwaters Barn is situated on a working farm which has been in the Highest Environmental Scheme for over 20 years to help protect the beautiful countryside where we are situated, so sorry no pets, assistance dogs excepted.

The cottages themselves provide:-

  • All cottages have profiling beds for maximum comfort to ensure a good night’s sleep.
  • All cottages are fully centrally heated, with individually controllable in each room.
  • The laundry room is available for use by our visitors.

  • Open all year round.

Disability Level 3 Assisted for Blue Tit and Kingfisher cottages. Level 2 for Robin and Wren cottages.
