He felt that the derelict old dairy / granary would make really good holiday cottages for people and families like himself who has found over the years that truly suitable accessible accommodation is almost impossible to find.
You soon learn what is required for a disabled person to go on holiday and be able to feel at home in their unknown surroundings.
As a family we believe that with our extensive knowledge of physical disabilities we can say with absolute confidence that the two large cottages (Blue Tit and Kingfisher) are truly wheelchair accessible. They have wide doors throughout the cottage and generous turning spaces in every room with a through lift to connect the upper floor to the ground floor. In these cottages whilst all the rooms are well sized the living areas are huge and the kitchens fully accessible for all to use. To make the cottages as flexible in use as possible Blue Tit Cottage has a large wet room whilst Kingfisher Cottage has a ceiling hoist in the traditional bathroom. The grab rails in the wet room and bathroom are movable and can be placed at any angle and any height to suit your requirements. We have mobile hoists for use in the bedrooms.
The two smaller cottages (Robin and Wren) do require some mobility as they have stair lifts but the rooms are still large enough to take a wheelchair and the bedrooms are spacious. The bathroom in Wren has a ceiling hoist should the occupant have difficulty in getting into or out of the bath. We also have Neptune bath aids to assist in getting into / out of the bath.
All the doors are level entry including the front doors.
Parking is available directly outside Blue Tit and Kingfisher Cottages with the entrance to Robin and Wren Cottages being up a short ramp. Parking for the latter two cottages is near by the cottages on level ground.
Finally we have various other items of equipment available and all the equipment may be used free of charge but you need to let us know what equipment you require prior to your arrival to ensure that it is available for the full length of your stay otherwise Mellwaters Barn cannot guarantee it’s availability.
