East Mellwaters Farm

The farm is situated on the site of an old Romano-British platform settlement dating back some 2000 years. Some of the settlement remains can be seen in certain lights in the field opposite the Barn. In the field across the Beck there is a circular enclosure dating back to the Iron Age and further up towards the Trough there is a ditched settlement. The old field system can be seen in certain lights in several of the fields.

The farm is a commercial farm and we breed both cattle and sheep.

There are purpose built footpaths to God's Bridge* and round to Waters Meet (Cadwell Bridge) with further purpose built footpaths* planned to enable all our visitors to enjoy the magnificent views that we have from various points on the farm. Other points of interest are the old lime kilns, and other settlements of archeological interest.

For lovers of birds there is a wide variety of bird life which often can be studied at close proximity. The hay meadows contain an increasing number of wild flowers including bluebells and violets with primroses on some of the river banks. Finally, if you are very lucky you might see an otter on the River Greta* or Sleightholme Beck.
